A NEW SEASON
A new season, and a new challenge, saw the departure of Lee Nicholas, David Case, Dan Walker, Josh Basham, Marcus De’ath, & Alex Charlick, with Jake Freemantle, Craig Blakeman, Lewis Alderman, George House, Karl Russell and Will Nimako coming in as their replacements. And more than capable they proved to be with some outstanding performance as results proved for Steve Walkley & his assistant Pete Owen’s team.
Inter County Cup Semi Final at Fleet Spurs 28-1-07
A now respected PHYL side came across a very strong North Hants side with great belief in their ability. And as the game started you could see why, with their outstanding midfield causing problems from the start putting the PHYL defence on the back foot. It took some fine saves from Jack Owen and great defending from the new look back four of Jack Parson, Sam Champion and Dan Walkley who came on for the injured Richard Hill to keep North Hants at bay. A fine header after 15 minutes saw North Hants put the ball in the net only for the goal to be ruled out for off-side. As the game progressed, PHYL midfield and front line managed to create a few chances but the North Hants keeper was up to the challenge, and the half ended 0-0.
The second half saw PHYL start off stronger following a tactical change with Karl Russell coming on in the centre of midfield to offer more bite. It didn’t take long for the change to take effect with Josh Knight hitting a long range shot in to the bottom corner to put PHYL, 1-0 up.
North Hants fought back hard and equalised within 5 minutes with a fine goal.
The following 10 minutes could have seen the game go either way with chances for both sides, but it was PHYL who capitalised on a mistake to see Craig Blakeman play the ball through to Nick Arnold to slide the ball past the keeper in to the net to make it 2-1.
Two more switches saw George House & Tom Sedgwick come on to protect the lead as North Hants went all out to try to equalise with the PHYL defence being put under real pressure. A fine tackle by Jack Parsons saw him release the ball to Rylan Willows who beat two players and crossed the ball in from the bye line to see Josh Knight rise high at the far post to make it 3-1.
With North Hants pushing forward PHYL exploited the open spaces and moved the ball across the pitch to release Nick Arnold who burst through & drill the ball past the North Hants keeper to put PHYL 4-1 up and take the through to the Final.
Team: Jack Owen; Richard Hill, Sam Champion, Jack Parsons, Rylan Willows, Josh Knight, Max Elward, Craig Blakeman, Nick Arnold, Olly Bode.
Subs: Dan Walkley, Tom Sedgwick, Karl Russell, George House.
Inter County Cup Final at Blackheath 25-1-07
Both teams were pleased to turn up and see the Blackheath pitch in excellent condition for the Inter County Cup Final following heavy rain.
From the kick off PHYL took control of the game with some tenacious tackling and good passing, moving the ball across the pitch. The Mid Solent keeper didn’t have to wait long before being tested by a long range shot from Olly Bode.
As PHYL kept on the pressure, good link up play between the Jake Freemantle and Craig Blakeman saw Blakeman beat his man and play the ball behind the Mid Solent defence for Nick Arnold to latch on and find the net to put PHYL 1-0 up.
This seemed to awaken the Mid Solent players and they attacked straight from the kick off to earn a free kick on the edge of the box which needed Jack Owen to be at his best to keep out.
PHYL responded well & it didn’t take long for them to create more chances and go
2-0 up following a fine through ball from Max Elward which saw Nick Arnold out pace the Mid Solent defence to slot home.
The second half proved to be much tougher with Mid Solent becoming more physical and direct. The PHYL back four stood strong & had to be at their best, as they were certainly the busier for long periods. This saw a series of changes with the introduction of George House, Rylan Willlows, Dan Walkley & Tom Sedgwick as PHYL changed shape. This seemed to have the desired effect and once again started to play the better football and get back in to the game. PHYL next chance came when a Karl Russell cross saw Nick Arnold’s volley hit the bar.
Few chances followed as both defences stood up well to the challenge, and as the final whistle blew a 2-0 victory was assured.
Team: Jack Owen, Sam Champion, Jake Freemantle, Jack Parsons, Karl Russell, Max Elward, Josh Knight, Craig Blakeman, Nick Arnold, Olly Bode.
Subs: Dan Walkley, Tom Sedgwick, George House, Rylan Willows.
MARTIN TURNER YOUTH CUP
A two legged affair played between all age groups from the Basingstoke and Andover Leagues, with the cup going to the League winning the most ties.
1st Leg PHYL v Testway at Charlton Sports Ground 19-12-06.
On a really foggy night with difficult playing condition PHYL turn in a stunning performance to beat Andover 9-1 but not without controversy. As the game was about to kick off a complaint from Andover was logged due to the selection of Craig Blakeman for the PHYL side. Andover stated a rule saying that due to geographical reasons Blakeman should be made available to Andover. This saw the unfortunate Blackman failing to play for either side but inspire PHYL.
From the Kick off PHYL set out to prove a point and went 1-0 up within minutes following a low shot from Nick Arnold. With PHYL playing sweeping football a second soon followed from a George House through ball that saw Arnold make it
2-0.
Andover’s only goal followed soon afterwards following a break away to give them hope, but a Olly Bode’s volley soon after made it 3-1. With Arnold completing his hat-trick on the stroke of half time PHYL went in at the break 4-1 up.
Andover started the second half stronger but the PHYL defence gave them no change and Jack Owen in goal was never bothered. PHYL midfield picked up the play and fine play saw Arnold score his 4th of the night. This saw the introduction of Tom Sedgwick & Lewis Alderman for PHYL with instant success as from the kick off Sedgwick won the ball and feed it to Alderman who played in Arnold to score his 5th and make it 6-1. This saw Will Nimako replace Arnold up front and set up his partner Bode to make it 7-1. 8-1 soon followed with defender Jack Parsons hitting a screamer from 25yds. Nimako rounded off the night with a fine solo goal, picking the ball up in midfield, beating his man and out pacing the Andover defence before rounding the keeper to make it 9-1.
Team:
Jack Owen, Richard Hill, Jake Freemantle, George House, Jack Parsons, Karl Russell, Josh Knight, Max Elward, Rylan Willows, Nick Arnold.
Subs: Tom Sedgwick, Lewis Alderman, Will Nimako.
2nd Leg PHYL v Testway at Charlton Sports Ground 17-04-07.
This game proved to be the final & deciding round between the Leagues, with the winner being presented the Martin Turner Youth Cup, as previous fixtures saw a tied Competition.
PHYL went in to this tie full of confidence after retaining the Inter County Cup. This proved to be just when an early goal from Nick Arnold gave them the upper hand following a cross from Max Elward.
Andover responded well and created a half chance that Jack Owen comfortably saved. The following 10 minutes was an even affair as both sides battled to take control of the game. It was the PHYL midfield who came out on top with Rylan Willows receiving a ball from Richard Hill, beating his man and crossing for Josh Knight to score to put PHYL 2-0 up.
This proved to be the turning point in the game with Andover’s belief disappearing. A third goal followed just before half time from a long range Olly Bode shot.
The second half saw PHYL resumed from where they had left off with some good attacking football and a defence splitting through ball from Sam Champion saw Arnold round the keeper to make it 4-0.
Andover changed shape, and for the next 15 minutes began to trouble the PHYL back line with some fine football but were still unable to force Jack Owen in to making a save.
This saw the introduction of Will Nimako, and he didn’t disappoint making an immediate impact by winning a ball he had no right to win & drive the ball pass the Andover keeper to make it 5-0. Nimako’s second soon followed as he out paced the Andover defence and latched on to a Alderman through ball to make it 6-0.
This gave victory to The PHYL League and saw the Cup presented to Captain Richard Hill.
Team: Jack Owen, Richard Hill, Jake Freemantle, Sam Champion, Jack Parsons,
Karl Russell, Max Elward, Josh Knight, Rylan Willows, Nick Arnold, Olly Bode.
Subs: Dan Walkley, Lewis Alderman, Will Nimako, Tom Sedgwick.
